Areas we cover in Thornaby

Thornaby is one town with three very different building periods: the old village on the Green, the industrial streets by the river, and the estates laid out on the former RAF airfield. These pages cover the parts of town where driveway questions differ most.

In short

We cover all of Thornaby-on-Tees (TS17), with local pages for Thornaby Green, Mandale, Victoria, Lanehouse, Stainsby Hill and Bassleton. Every address is in Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council's area, so the same driveway crossing process applies across the town, while Thornaby Green's conservation area brings extra planning checks.

Thornaby neighbourhoods

  • Thornaby Green: the old village and conservation area around St Peter ad Vincula.
  • Mandale: where the old Mandale estate has given way to the new homes of Mandale Park.
  • Victoria: the riverside streets of the 19th-century town once called South Stockton.
  • Lanehouse: early-1900s terraces and semis along and off Lanehouse Road.
  • Stainsby Hill: post-war and later estates on the eastern side of town.
  • Bassleton: leafy streets around Bassleton Lane and Bassleton Woods.

The airfield estates

Much of southern Thornaby stands on the former RAF Thornaby airfield, which closed to flying in 1958 and was bought by the then borough council in 1962. Through the 1960s and 1970s it was built over with housing, the town centre (completed in stages between 1965 and 1968) and an industrial estate. Homes from this period often have open-plan fronts and original concrete drives, which is why replacing a concrete drive is such a common job here.

One council

All of Thornaby is covered by Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council for highways and planning. The owner applies for a dropped kerb, and the council or a contractor with its Opening Up licence builds it.
