How this part of town grew
Industry arrived on the south bank of the Tees in the early 19th century: a pottery in 1824, glassworks in 1839 and iron works and shipyards later. The settlement by the bridge, known as South Stockton, became the independent town of Thornaby-on-Tees in 1892, when its town hall was built at the corner of Mandale Road. The terraced streets of that era were built for people who walked to work.
No front garden
Where the front door opens onto the footway, there is nowhere to park off the road at the front, and a dropped kerb will not be granted. Parking on the pavement is not a legal workaround.
Rear parking
Some terraces back onto lanes wide enough for a car. If your yard is deep enough to take a car without blocking the lane:
- Find out who owns the lane. Some back lanes are adopted highway; others are private or unadopted.
- Check the turning space. A narrow lane may make getting in and out impractical.
- Gates should open inwards, not across the lane.
- Crossings onto an adopted street follow the council's driveway crossing process.
Our guide to parking for terraced houses goes through this in more detail.
The yard instead
Often the better investment is the yard itself: lifting cracked concrete and laying a drained patio with space for bins and bikes.
Common questions
Can I get a dropped kerb at the front of a terrace with no garden?
No. There has to be room to park within your boundary.
Can I park in my back yard?
Possibly, if the yard is big enough and the lane allows access.
Who maintains the back lane?
It depends whether it is adopted. Check with the council.
What about residents' parking?
On-street parking controls are a separate council matter from driveway crossings.
